AS WINTER DOLDRUMS SET IN - COME PLAY... FIBRE ARTS RETREAT, February 21-23, 2014

Bethany Garner presents a three day FIBRE ARTS RETREAT February 21- 23rd, 2014 for those interested in play time during the Cabin Fever days of late February.  This workshop is sponsored by FIBREWORKS KINGSTON and is open to everyone... come for all three days, or choose one or two of the days that are of most interest to you. The workshop weekend will only be cancelled and re-scheduled with fees carried forward to the new date if a blizzard sets in and travel locally would be dangerous. Car pooling with friends is a great idea... so gather a couple of friends and come play!

The Retreat Weekend offers 9:30-5 pm each day instruction and will be held at the Odessa Fairgrounds Hall. Students joining Bethany will have a chance to either “do their own thing” with their own projects and guidance/assistance from Bethany, a seasoned fibre artist and Instructor in the Textile Design Program at St. Lawrence College…. OR take part in the three separate “play day” activities Beth has planned…

Friday, Feb. 21st is “INDIGO: an Introduction, (with opportunity to add to the Indigo vats on Saturday and Sunday but no instruction)
Saturday, February 22nd is “FLAT DYEING" - a great way to dye fabric and YES it can be done very safely and with terrific results indoors with some care to manage your work site and carry wet fabrics home in a large container for rinsing at a later date
Sunday, February 23rd is “SCREEN PRINTING with Thickened Dyes”. Beth will demo torn paper, resist based work and free form "deconstructed" screen work. Students would need to have a 10" x 14" screen and a squeegee prepared before the workshop.

Take advantage of all three days Feb. 21-23rd for a special $120.00 or choose one or even two days. Each single day is $50.00  if you can only do one.  Dyes will be provided.  You will receive a Supplies list with paid registration.

Please plan to bring Brown Bag lunch. Coffee, tea and break snacks provided.

Contact Bethany at fibreworkskingston@gmail.com for a pdf descriptive and registration form or visit see the FIBREWORKS KINGSTON Blog for all of the details.

Last year, some of you were kind enough to also fill a bag of items after the bazaar and try your hand at a bit of fundraising of your own at the office or in your home, with your friends; that was very successful. I give here special thanks to Monica, Faye and Malka amongst others for their help in extending the Bazaar beyond my house and boosting our income for 2012. I hope others will try it this year. Just ask Monica, faye and Malka how much fun it was for them.

On behalf of Dr. Jack and all the volunteers of Calcutta Rescue in Kolkata, I want to thank you sincerely for your continued enthusiasm and support.

Please use our online form to enter, available on www.hoffmanchallenge.com. Don’t forget to submit the form and print the Thank You page.
If you are unable to use this, contact the curator for a hard copy application.
All entrants receive a fat quarter of Hoffman Fabric, a spool of Sulky thread, and a beautiful cloisonné pin designed for the challenge. You will also receive an application and images of the next year’s Challenge fabric and coordinates.

General Challenge Rules:
1. A recognizable amount of the Hoffman Challenge 2014 Fabric Style L7292 68 Indigo must be used as an integral part of the entry, and must appear in the body of the quilt, not just the border. Any amount of any other fabric may be used.
2. Judging emphasizes originality, creative use of the challenge fabric as it relates to other fabrics, visual impact, and workmanship.
3. To be considered for judging, entries must be able to travel as a part of one of the collections and will be shipped to shows throughout the year. The items in the collections will be packed and unpacked many times during that year. While great care is taken to protect the items in the collection as carefully as possible, breakable embellishments and other breakable props may become damaged. Special packing instructions cannot be followed. When designing your entry (especially dolls) these factors should be taken into consideration so that entries are not fragile. Quilts must be able to be folded. (Curator’s Note: Your entry must be able to withstand multiple exhibits and truck rides. If it is not well made, it may not survive, so plan and create accordingly. Nothing makes us sadder than to have to refuse an awesome entry because it won’t travel well.)
4. Your entry must be received by the curator, Julie Breidt, (see website for shipping address), no later than July 18, 2014. No late entries will be accepted. Please, no large shipping containers or Styrofoam peanuts. Please wrap dolls and accessories with bubble wrap, if necessary, and consider padded envelopes for the quilts.
5. Multiple entries per person will be accepted with separate fees and forms for each (total the fees, and include them on one check). The entry must be in one of the categories listed below.
6. The entry must be accompanied by a $15.00 entry fee ($25 for foreign entries) and paperwork. A copy of the entry form and fee must be included in the shipping carton. Make checks payable to Julie Breidt. For delivery confirmation, enclose a SASE, or a SAS postcard. We will send an email confirmation to all who accurately and clearly write their email address on the application. Add us to your safe sender’s list.
7. Entries must be clean when they are received or they may be returned. Do not add potpourri, sachets or any other fragrances to your entry, as many people (including curators or judges) may be allergic. Cigarette odor may result in immediate disqualification.
8. Items selected to travel will not be returned until late October, 2015. Items not accepted for travel will be returned by late September, 2014.
Quilt Category Entry Rules:
1. The quilt can be of any shape, but the combined total of all sides of the quilt cannot be less than 72 inches nor more than 160 inches (for example an 18” x 18” quilt equals 72”, a 40” x 40” quilt equals 160”). A round quilt cannot have a diameter greater than 40 inches. (Curator’s Note: any shape is the key phrase here, yes, you can use scalloped edges and non-traditional designs, but they must hang well from a sleeve with no other support or pins.)
2. Each quilt must have a sleeve attached to the top back for hanging. The sleeve opening must be 4 inches wide after it is attached to the quilt, and must be attached in a way that it will not show when the quilt is hanging.
3. A fabric identification label must be securely sewn to a bottom back corner of the quilt (a paper label pinned to the quilt is not acceptable). The label must contain the same full name and address that appears on the official entry form. The label should also contain the title of the entry and your contact information.
4. All quilt layers must be secured with quilting or tying - false backs not secured to the batting or quilt front may not be used.
5. Quilts will be judged in one of the following categories; appliqué, pieced, or mixed technique. Please mark the appropriate category on the form. (Curator’s Note: We reserve the right to change the category if we decide it is appropriate and/or necessary.)
Doll Category Entry Rules:
1. Dolls must be between 12” and 20” in total height including any stand.
2. Doll stands (non breakable) shall not exceed 7” on any side or a 7” diameter for round stands. (Curator’s Note: A quarter inch dowel will not support a heavy doll in all of the traveling. Use unbreakable supports, and consider that the dolls are wrapped in a single layer of bubble wrap, then placed in a trunk with the other dolls for travel. If your doll requires special handling, it will not travel.) The stand must be an integral part of the doll in both design and construction, and MUST be securely attached to the doll. No pre-purchased stands, please, unless altered to coordinate with and compliment the doll.
3. Dolls must have cloth bodies with human features and not be representative of animals.
4. Non-breakable props for dolls must be securely attached.
5. An identification label containing the same full name and address that appears on the entry form must be securely fastened to the doll and any stand or prop. The label should be on the underside of the clothing or some other place that is easily accessible, but doesn’t show (a paper label pinned to the doll is not acceptable). The doll should be finished for viewing from all sides, and the label should not to be seen when viewing the doll from the front or back.
Clothing Category Entry Rules:
1. Clothing may be of any size, but not heavy winter type clothing.
2. Accessories are welcome as a part of a garment ensemble, but may not be suitable for travel. If you wish to have the accessory compete in the Accessory Category, you must submit an additional entry fee.
3. A FABRIC identification label containing the same full name and address that appears on the entry form must be securely fastened to each clothing piece of the ensemble on the inside of garment or at the hem (a paper label pinned to an item is not acceptable). We must be able to easily find the label.
Accessory Category Entry Rules:
1. This category can include hats, boxes, purses, etc. Boxes, purses, etc. cannot be larger than 12”x12”(base)x12”(height) (excluding purse handles). Small items, such as jewerly or cuffs, should be securely attached to and within a shadow box.
2. The rules above apply, including attaching a cloth label. Creative use of fabric, durability, workmanship, etc. will be considered.
Thread Award Rules To qualify for any of the “Best Use of Sulky” awards, you must check the box certifying that you’ve used Sulky thread, and document the thread type used. The thread must be used in an obvious way, as in thread embellishment, quilting, embroidery, etc.

Please use our online form to enter, available on
www.hoffmanchallenge.com. Don’t forget to print and submit the form.

I am running a 5K for Cancer in memory of my parents and for my family - find out how you can join in right from home...

For a number of years I have contributed to the FIBRE ART FOR A CAUSE fundraising efforts of Virginia Spiegel and special group of friends and artists in the US and Canada. One of my all time most inspirational fibre artists, Virginia has focused her commitment to the American Cancer Society with FIBRE ART auctions online and at the International Quilt Festival with donations from her network of friends. Many "big name" and very generous artists work alongside Ginny to make sure that the very best of the best art is out there and available for auction by collectors who also want to support the fight for Cancer Research and funding.

Last year, my donation brought home the beautiful piece, THE LOCK donated by Linda Colsh of Belgium. It so reminded me of my mother who was a Kidney Cancer survivor... walking home.

Over the past five years, I have added art to my personal collection by participating in Virginia's art sponsored fundraisers.  I invite you to join me this next year, and if not in this event, please make sure that you designate a donation in 2014 to the Canadian (or American) Cancer Society in your town or province. As a survivor, and two parents and a sister who were cancer survivors, I know how important research and advanced knowledge for our personal physicians is...think about participating if you can.

Bethany

How you too can participate:

Mark your calendar for January 15, 2014 and join me as I run the Fiber 5K to Fight Cancer. OK, I won't actually be jogging around a race course. But I will be joining the fun as Fiberart For A Cause's virtual race kicks off with a goal of donating $5000 directly to the American Cancer Society.

Generous Prize Sponsors for drawings means there will be many winners at the 1K ($1000) mark, 2K ($2000) mark, etc., plus a Grand Prize drawing when we cross the Finish Line.

According to Race Director, Virginia Spiegel, "Fiberart For A Cause likes to have fun while raising money to fight cancer, so, of course, there are going to be more "race" details revealed as January 15 draws closer. 100% of donations are given directly to the American Cancer Society through Fiberart For A Cause. Fiberart For A Cause has already donated more than $230,000 to the American Cancer Society thanks to the generosity of fiber artists and patrons."

Local INNOVATIVE THREADS GROUP (evenings) to meet on second Mondays at St. John's Church

At a meeting of the local Kingston INNOVATIVE THREADS GROUP last evening, November 11th, the members in attendance agreed that meetings will continue on the second Monday of each month through June 2014. Meetings are now moved to ST. JOHN'S CHURCH HALL from St. Lawrence College as agreed by the members attending the Nov. 11th meeting. The church offers a safe and centrally located place to meet that is a good solution for members as agreed. The goal is to have as many local, threads and stitch interested members/guests out to meetings as possible...won't YOU join the group and enjoy some networking time?

Membership/attendance is open to everyone and YOU are most welcome and invited to join the group members for evenings of social fun, sharing of new work and an opportunity to chat, learn from one another and enjoy each others company. The next meeting is December 9th at 6:30 pm.

A vote was taken of members in attendance on Nov. 11th, and a donation of $20 per person for the yearly "dues" for the group was established. The dollars collected from all regular members are to be donated in full to the St. John's Church as a thank you for offering us the meeting space each month.

Meetings may be in the lower Church Hall or alternatively in a Sunday School classroom if Church activities take precedence. Entry will be through "side door" at 6:30ish pm...unless the main front doors of the church are open. Parking is along Church Street or at the end near sports field.

December 9th, 2013
Those attending the evening should bring a treat to share and Holiday Smiles.
There will be a DEMO by Diane Hogan on her use of "WASP NEST" "fabric" in new work.

January 14th, 2014
Lee Goodchild will share a demo of Long and Short Embroidery Stitch (or her favourite variation). You will b advised about supplies in December if required (fabric, needles, floss, scissors etc)

Volunteers to demo or share a technique they love are always welcome. There is not a FORMAL program. The ITK group does have an extensive library to share with members.  (Soon a library box will be chosen, and location of the group's books will be at the Church if all goes as planned)

Please plan to join members in ITK if you have time and would like a great opportunity to network with like minded fibre friends. Meetings start at 6:30 and may be cancelled in case of inclement weather.

ITK Day Group meetings continue at the St. John's Church Hall on the fourth Tuesday from 10:30 - 3 pm...and you are welcome at either or both groups. The "dues/donation" from the evening group mentioned above do not apply to the day group which may have their own membership policies re:  monetary donations.

Please contact Donna Hamilton at Hamilton@queensu.ca for details or with questions. Donna belongs to both groups and maintains the email/contacts list of members.  (Donna can add you to the email list of notifications if you ask.)
